Wind Orchestra

The Wind Orchestra is the chief ensemble of FCMA. This group consists of approximately 48 wind, brass and percussion musicians and performs four times per year under the direction of Jeff Malecki. Our members have extensive performance experience and many hold degrees in their instrument. Repertoire performed is of a substantially classical genre.

Windscape

Windscape is a wind-focused chamber ensemble that performs around San Diego County in small venues including library concerts, school assemblies, dessert and coffee date night concerts, art galleries, and other community spaces. The ensemble boasts some of the finest players in FCMA.

Harmonyx

Harmonyx is a passionate saxophone quartet based in San Diego, comprised of four talented musicians bringing diverse backgrounds and expertise to their captivating performances. Led by Robert Castro on soprano saxophone, Nick Muellner on alto, Iisak Niemela on tenor, and Aaron on baritone, each member infuses their playing with unique influences, from classical precision to emotional expression. As proud members of the Finest City Musician Alliance, Harmonyx showcases the beauty and versatility of the saxophone across a wide range of genres, offering unforgettable musical experiences for audiences in San Diego and beyond.

Brass Ensemble

The Finest City Brass Ensemble is comprised of 20-25 musicians who perform major works for brass and percussion including contemporary repertoire and notable transcriptions. Their mission is to build meaningful relationships with their community through musical excellence, accessible performances around San Diego, and meaningful collaborations with future generations of brass and percussion players. 

Artistic Director: Jeff Malecki, BME, MME, DMA

Dr. Jeffrey Malecki grew up in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He holds degrees in music education and conducting from Central Michigan University, VanderCook College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Malecki began his career at Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix, where the student’s and program’s growth were a formative part of his early teaching career. While at UNLV, Dr. Malecki worked closely with mentors Thomas Leslie, Tony LaBounty, and Tad Suzuki to broaden his understanding of conducting, teaching, and programming. With hands-on experience leading the renowned UNLV Wind Orchestra, Las Vegas Youth Wind Orchestra, and Community Band, Dr. Malecki conducted in Ireland and Italy. He also had the opportunity to count as a mentor Colonel John R. Bourgeois, Director Emeritus of “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, resulting in his biographical and theory-based dissertation. After leading the bands, orchestra and music education program at Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Dr. Malecki began the formal band program at the University of San Diego in 2014. Since then, the program has grown into the Wind Ensemble, Torero Pep Band, and Drumline, and The Wind Ensemble. Dr. Malecki also designed and implemented the Music Education degree, and continues to update programs and classes to maximize relevance and interest for the USD community.
